Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer in-person appointments?

No. All services are provided through telehealth only. This means you receive care from your own space via video or phone, with no need to travel to an office. Telehealth is covered by Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) for eligible clients and offers the same quality of care as in-person sessions.

Who do you work with?

I work with adults (18+) who want help with substance use concerns. This includes people who are:

  • Just starting to notice problems with alcohol or drug use

  • Working through DUI, probation, CPS, or other system-related requirements

  • Looking for early intervention support before things get worse

  • In recovery and wanting maintenance support

  • Navigating addiction concerns and seeking nonjudgmental care

Do I have to be ready to quit completely?

No. The first step is simply being honest about what is happening and what you want to change. Some clients want abstinence, others want harm reduction, and others want to cut back. We work with whatever goal is realistic for you — not what someone else thinks you should want. Motivational Interviewing, one of the approaches I use, is specifically designed for people who are ambivalent about change.

How private is Telehealth?

Telehealth offers a convenient and private way to receive care from your own space. Sessions are conducted through secure, encrypted video or phone platforms that meet HIPAA privacy standards. You can attend sessions from anywhere with internet access — your home, a private office, or even a quiet outdoor space. I do not share any information about your care without your written consent.

What is ASAM and why do you use it?

ASAM stands for American Society of Addiction Medicine. The ASAM Criteria are the nationally recognized, evidence-based standard for determining appropriate level of care for substance use disorders. I use ASAM because it assesses your whole situation — not just how much you're using — and matches you to the right level of care. It's person-centered, not program-centered. Most insurers and Medicaid programs use ASAM for treatment authorization.

Can you help with legal requirements like DUI or probation?

es. I provide support for adults dealing with DUI, probation, CPS, or other outside requirements connected to substance use concerns. I can document attendance, provide treatment plans, and communicate with your case manager or probation officer (with your written consent). I do not provide legal advice, but I can support you through the clinical side of system requirements.

What makes this practice different from large programs??

This is a small, independent practice — I am the sole provider. That means:

  • You get personal attention — not rushed sessions or case numbers

  • You work with the same person — no rotating through multiple clinicians

  • Care is individualized — not a one-size-fits-all program

  • I'm in recovery myself — I understand from both sides

  • You're not a revenue target — I'm not part of a corporation

Do you take insurance?

I accept PMAP/Medicaid (Minnesota Health Care Programs) and private pay. Contact me for current rates and payment options.

How often do sessions happen?

Most clients attend sessions weekly or biweekly. Frequency is based on your ASAM level of care, your goals, and what schedule works for you. ASAM Level 1.5 outpatient therapy typically involves less than 9 hours per week total, which can include one-on-one sessions plus any additional support.

How do I get started?

Use the contact form to request a consultation. During the consultation, we'll review your concerns, your goals, and what kind of support you're looking for. If we decide to move forward, I'll create an ASAM-based treatment plan and we'll begin sessions by telehealth.

What if I need more intensive care than outpatient therapy?

If I assess that you need Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or inpatient treatment (ASAM Level 2.1 or higher), I will help you find a local provider and support you through the transition. I can also continue to provide telehealth support while you're in a more intensive program, if appropriate.

What if I'm not in Minnesota?

I currently serve clients in Minnesota via telehealth. If you're outside Minnesota, I may not be able to provide care due to licensing and state regulations. Contact me to discuss your situation — I can sometimes provide guidance or help you find a provider in your area.
